Ant And Dec Among Early Winners At Baftas

Sky News –

Ant and Dec were the first big winners at the TV Baftas, scooping best entertainment programme for Saturday Night Takeaway.

Accepting the award at the Theatre Royal in London, Declan Donnelly said winning was "really just a nice big cherry on top of a cake we all love".

The event, hosted by Graham Norton, is the biggest night of the year for the British television industry.

Cilla Black received a standing ovation when she went up to collect her Bafta Special Award from fellow scouser Paul O'Grady.

The Blind Date presenter dedicated her win to her viewers, who had made her "feel so welcome over the years".

Sky Sports' coverage of the Ashes saw the channel triumph in the sport and live event category, while the current affairs award went to Channel 4's Dispatches Syria: Across the Lines.

In The Flesh, a BBC Three drama, won the mini-series gong, and The Murder Trial was recognised as best single documentary.

ITV News at Ten's coverage of the murder of soldier Lee Rigby earned the programme the award for news coverage.

Coronation Street won the battle of the soaps, before Sir David Attenborough's Natural History Museum Alive 3D scooped the Bafta for specialist factual.

Broadchurch's David Bradley was named best supporting actor for his role in the crime drama.

A League of Their Own beat Norton's chat show to the comedy and comedy entertainment programme award.

In the best supporting actress category, Sarah Lancashire's role in Last Tango in Halifax earned her a gong.

The best sitcom was BBC Three's Him and Her: The Wedding, while Gogglebox came out on top in the reality and constructed factual category.

Speaking to Sky News before the event, actor Dominic West admitted he would not have watched the critically acclaimed crime drama The Wire if he was not in it.

The actor, nominated in the leading actor category, said he is "daunted" by boxsets because of their size.

But he did admit there was an upside to them: "The great thing about boxsets is they've allowed the writer to become the most important thing on telly and that's always a good thing."

West is nominated for his role in Burton and Taylor.

He plays Richard Burton, while the role of the legendary actor's wife, Elizabeth Taylor, is played by Helena Bonham Carter.

Bonham Carter is in contention for the leading actress prize for her role.
