Director*s son kills 6 in rampage

Press Association –

The British-born son of a Hollywood film-maker stabbed three men to death in his apartment before killing three more people in a drive-by shooting in Santa Barbara, California, police said today.

Sheriff Bill Brown said the suspect, confirmed as 22-year-old Elliot Rodger, was believed to have shot himself in his car after he fought two gun battles with police.

Mr Brown said it was a "chaotic, rapidly unfolding convoluted incident" across 10 separate locations in the area near the University of California campus.

Rodger was found with three 9mm semi-automatic guns in his car and more than 400 rounds of unused ammunition and Mr Brown said he had "no doubt" there would have been further loss of life if police had not intervened.

Mr Brown said a further 13 people were injured, including four Rodger ran down in his car and eight who were shot.

Seven people remain in hospital, two of whom are in a serious condition.

Police said Rodger drove around the beach community for 10 minutes, opening fire randomly and exchanging gunfire with police officers before crashing his BMW into a parked car. He was found shot dead in the head, believed to be suicide.

Mr Brown said all three guns - two Sig Sauer P226 hand guns and a Glock 34 Long Slide - were legally bought from licensed firearms dealers and were registered in Rodger's name.

Rodger, who had Asperger's syndrome, had posted several videos online, including one on the day of the shootings that Mr Brown described as "particularly chilling".

In the YouTube video, entitled "Elliot Rodger's retribution", he describes plans to shoot women and promises retribution for his "loneliness and frustration" at never having had a girlfriend and still being a virgin.

Mr Brown said it was "very, very apparent that he was severely mentally disturbed".

Police previously described the spree as "premeditated mass murder".

The shootings began at 9.30pm local time on Friday night (5.30am yesterday British time).

Rodger's father, film-maker Peter Rodger, was educated in Maidstone, Kent, and was assistant director on 2012 blockbuster The Hunger Games.

The director's lawyer, Alan Shifman, said in a statement that the family had contacted police several weeks ago after they were concerned by YouTube videos made by Rodger which featured "suicide and the killing of people".

Mr Shifman also said Rodger had received help from "multiple therapists" and his social work last week was sufficiently concerned about him to call the police.
