Michael Wheatley, who was arrested after going missing from an open prison, has been charged with carrying out an armed robbery.
The 55-year-old is accused of carrying out the raid at the Chelsea Building Society in Sunbury-on-Thames in Surrey on Wednesday while on the run from HMP Standford Hill on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.
He has also been charged by Surrey Police with possession of a firearm or imitation firearm and being unlawfully at large.
A second man, Kevin Perry, 53, from east London, has been charged with assisting an offender, perverting the course of justice and handling stolen goods.
The pair remain in police custody and will appear at East Surrey Magistrates' Court later today.
