Swimming champion gains six GCSEs

Press Association –

Olympic swimming champion and world record holder Ruta Meilutyte has added six GCSEs to her impressive haul of sporting successes.

The 17-year-old Lithuanian was going to wait until she had finished competing at the European Swimming Championships this weekend to find out her exam results.

But the Plymouth College student found the temptation too great and discovered she has secured two As, one B and three C grades in her GCSEs.

"I am really pleased to have passed all of my GCSEs in a year where I've also trained very hard and had great results in the pool," the teenager said.

"I'd like to thank the teachers at Plymouth College very much for all their support of me. It's been another great year at Plymouth College for me."

It has been a particularly hectic month for the world record holder.

She has won five gold medals and a silver at the British Gas National Youth Championships in Sheffield, took a further two golds at the Youth Olympics in China before travelling to Berlin to compete for the European 50m breaststroke title this weekend.

Meilutyte shot to fame at the London 2012 Olympics winning gold in the 100m breaststroke. She has since broken world records and added world championship medals to her tally.

Sarah Dunn, deputy head and director of sport at Plymouth College, said: "Ruta's results are impressive not only because of her hectic training and competition schedule, but also because English is her second language.

"She applies the same determination and focus that she has for her swimming to her studies and this has really paid off for her both in the pool and in the classroom."

Overall the college saw a 10% increase in the number of students getting grades at A* or A.
