UK and France press EU on Iraq aid

Press Association –

David Cameron has tasked officials to identify how a refugee camp can be bolstered to cope with people fleeing Islamic militants, Downing Street said.

A humanitarian expert will also be seconded to the Kurdistan regional government in Erbil to increase its ability to respond to the crisis, according to No 10.

They added the UK will continue aid drops over Mount Sinjar in northern Iraq in the coming days while plans to rescue stranded Yazidis are firmed up, including Britain's role in the action.

The actions were discussed at today's meeting of the Government's Cobra emergency committee, which was chaired by the Prime Minister following his return from a family holiday.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Cameron said that "detailed plans are now being put in place" for an international mission to rescue Yazidis in Iraq and that Britain "will play a role in delivering it".

He insisted the UK involvement remained a humanitarian mission as he faced calls to directly arm Kurdish forces or join the US in air strikes against Islamic State (IS) extremist fighters.

Mr Cameron also dismissed demands for Parliament to be recalled, saying it was unnecessary at this stage but would be kept under review.
