Dave Lee Travis was an opportunist who acted as though he had the perfect right to grope women, a court has heard.
The former Radio One DJ has gone on trial at London's Southwark Crown Court accused of three assaults.
The 69-year-old is being retried on one count of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault upon which a jury were unable to reach verdicts earlier this year.
He also faces a further count of indecent assault alleged to have taken place in 1995.
Opening the case for the prosecution, Miranda Moore QC told the court the three alleged victims felt upset, embarrassed and were unsure what to do following the alleged incidents.
"In 2012, Operation Yewtree was set up and its major incident room received complaints referring to sexual assaults allegedly committed by a man that the complainants knew as Dave Lee Travis," she said.
"A number of women came forward after this defendant indicated on television and radio that he, Dave Lee Travis, was innocent of any such behaviour."
Ms Moore said the alleged offences spanned a period from 1985 to 2008 and were said to have taken place when Travis was working as a DJ or entertainer, or in his home.
Ms Moore said the jury would hear from the three women concerned, and two other women who would make similar allegations.
She said: "We say... he has a propensity towards laying his hands in a sexual manner on young women who are alone with him or in vulnerable positions.
"He is an opportunist."
Ms Moore said the women were in their "early 20s or 20s" when the offences allegedly took place.
According to them, he "simply seemed to act as if he had a perfect right to touch their breasts or put his hands in their clothing to grope them."
Ms Moore said the women were shocked by the alleged assaults and although they had not told police because of Travis' celebrity status, all had confided in other people at the time.
She said the first charge related to a woman who was working on a production of Aladdin in which Travis was starring.
The woman claimed that the DJ assaulted her while they were alone in his dressing room, holding the door closed as he put his hand inside her trousers.
The second charge relates to an alleged assault by Travis on a young woman working on the Mrs Merton Show.
Ms Moore said he approached the woman in the corridor where she was smoking and, commenting on her "poor little lungs", put his hands on her chest for at least 10-15 seconds until she backed away.
The third charge relates to a female journalist who says she was groped by Travis when she went to his home to interview him.
Giving evidence, the woman said he touched her chest, holding his hands there for several seconds, as she stood in the kitchen after the interview.
She said he then acted as if nothing had happened.
Travis, who was arrested in October 2012, denies all of the incidents, jurors heard.
The case was adjourned until 10am on Monday.
