Clarke talks up UK*s amazing sheds

Press Association –

George Clarke has said working on a special shed version of his show Amazing Spaces made him realise the value of the humble garden shed.

The architect fronts Amazing Spaces: Shed Of The Year for Channel 4, which gives a run down of some of the best entries in the competition, and said he thought people were becoming more ambitious with their garden projects.

He told TV Times: "I think the garden shed started off as being a storage space for your garden tools or somewhere to do a bit of DIY, but then people began to realise that it's quite a nice escape from everyday living.

"People are more adventurous and creative when they do things outside the house. When you do something inside, it's usually quite expensive and there's a lot of pressure on doing the right thing.

"You worry about making it too personal. You'd never make it too quirky or eccentric because you worry about the resale value or your mates thinking you're a bit weird."

George revealed he'd also been inspired to convert his own shed: "I've made a garden studio for the kids where they can draw, create and make whatever mess they like. I've also converted a tiny garage into a TV room and I've linked the two with a butterfly house. They spend all their time down there.

"Now I don't have to be the dad who says, 'Don't do this, don't make a mess.' They can do what they like. It's been a revelation."

Amazing Spaces: Shed Of The Year is on Channel 4 on July 25.
