Rugby Star Guilty Of Assaulting Ex-Miss Wales

Sky News –

Welsh international rugby star Ian Gough has been found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Sophia Cahill, a former Miss Wales.

The assault came just weeks after Miss Cahill, 30, had become engaged to pop star Dane Bowers.

Beauty queen Miss Cahill wept in court as she told how Gough, 37, shoved her into the passenger door of his white VW campervan.

She said she was "shocked and upset" by the assault, which took place after the second row player arrived late to a meeting at her home on January 5.

Terry Carpenter, chairman of the bench, told Croydon Magistrates' Court he found Miss Cahill's evidence "convincing".

Gough, of Swansea, was found guilty of assault by beating at the house in South Croydon, London.

Miss Cahill, who gave evidence from behind a blue curtain, said: "I opened the passenger door and Ian just stormed around the front of the van.

"He had the front of my shoulder and he just flung me back."

She added that the attack made her existing whiplash injuries worse. She told the court she had been involved ina  car accident days before the attack.

Miss Cahill and Another Level singer Mr Bowers were engaged over Christmas last year.

Mr Bowers told the court he sent an angry text to Gough after the assault, which read: "did you just lay your f****** hands on Sophie?"

He added: "He grabbed Sophie and moved her away from the car. It was forceful enough that I wondered... I couldn't hear what was said.

"But in my eyes he had no reason or permission to grab her and move her out of the way."

Gough made 64 appearances for Wales and currently plays for Newport Dragons.

Sentencing was adjourned until August 26.
